Merchants Of Lumber & General Hardware For Heritage Buildings

Deconstruction

Much of the vintage building materials collected by Onslow Historic Lumber Co. are salvaged from derelict buildings of early to late nineteenth century Nova Scotia. Please note that where possible we advocate saving historic buildings rather than demolishing or deconstructing them. Deconstruction itself is the term given to the methodical piece by piece dismantling of a structure. We offer deconstruction services to property owners throughout central Nova Scotia. Certain benefits to deconstruction are readily identifiable:

Recycling of wood and other materials at a time when we are becoming more aware of the damage caused by our throw-away society.

Reduction in property tax for the property owner.

A previously untapped source of reasonably-priced building materials for the construction industry which is faced with ever-increasing costs.

As much as 60% of the construction material of a building diverted from landfill sites as compared to demolition by excavator where 100% of material is generally trucked away to a landfill site.

Unsafe buildings left to fall down on their own pose serious risks to unwary individuals and
potential liability issues for property owners.

Supply of vintage materials to a population increasingly aware of the cultural and economic benefits of maintaining heritage properties.

Please contact us if you feel you have a property that should be dismantled and may still yield some reusable materials. Be safe and be good to your environment!
